To provide leadership training and skills-building opportunities for students enrolled in WRI’s two-semester, credit-bearing Community Leadership Program at Hunter College. The Community Leadership Program curriculum is designed to promote interactive learning among students with firsthand experience of poverty (and across all income levels), scholars, advocates, organizers, service providers and activists to engage in welfare policy debates. The program exposes students to information about the social welfare system and develops their capacity as leaders, organizers and trainers of others who seek to influence the public policies that affect their lives. Starting with self awareness, students connect with who they are, and build to awareness of issues affecting their larger communities. A key model of the training is to connect theories of leadership with practice so that students can make immediate and concrete applications of their newly developed skills to help affect positive change in their communities.
